Getting individual feedback on instrument playing skills can be difficult when bands and orchestras are made up of many students. Matt Veenstra and Mark Lucas, middle school band and orchestra teachers, decided to leverage the built in tools of the MacBook laptops to individualize practice feedback.
Since every MacBook comes with a microphone built-in, middle school band and orchestra students record their practices using the laptops. The practices are recorded into Garage Band, software that comes standard on every student's laptop. Student can evaluate, and re-record until the practice piece meets their satisfaction. They then upload the recording of their practice to Moodle, an online course management tool. Once uploaded the pieces are evaluated and individual feedback is given by the teacher.
Students get quality timely feedback that helps them improve their playing. Teachers are able to manage giving individual feedback and still maximize class time for full group practice.
