I loved the conversation that took place about
Facebook Hours. Thanks
so much for your honesty and thoughtfulness. I have several questions
to ask the community, which I hope will include more teachers, parents
and administrators this time. This is just one. I noticed in the comments that there are
students who struggle with balance when they have their laptops. If
there are a few who commented this, then there are probably more who struggle
silently. What do you think the school can do to help them? Should the
school do anything to help them? What do you think you, their peers,
could do to help a friend caught in this struggle? Thanks in advance
for your comments.

this isn't a struggle , its a choice. it shouldn't be the schools choice. we pay enough just to get here in this bad economy. let us do what we feel to. lets not be put in a cage and be told what to do and lets be free to do what we wish/ no matter the consequences. anyways. we should have a choice. if were wasting our time then let us do that. its gonna our if it is :regret to not get good grades, and not a good job and career and just slack off and do facebook all day then that us . its not facebook its US. just because we use facbook then that doesn't mean we don't do our homework. people do have study halls yo know.

I really wish we had a choice weather to have these laptops or not. I know I could be doing so much better with out having this laptop, its just a distraction. It's also a very confusing thing to have as well, so I don't understand why students are not allowed to go with out a laptop when they (like me) would feel that they would do much better in school with out one.

I feel like I would be repeating what I said before in my other comment in the old post. I think no one is really "struggling" with facebook from school, they just choose to use there home time (away from the 8 hours a day you have our attention already) on facebook. After we are out of the doors of school it is our decision to what we want to do with our lives and school should never try to take hold of that or try to direct us apart from homework. School can't walk besides us in life and as colin had said, hold our hands along the way. A lot of us are going to travel away from HCHS with a graduates degree (some of us in another 1 or 2 years) and we have to decide and learn how to use our time wisely or un-wisely and deal with the consequences ourselves so we can face the facts and go from there.

I really love having my laptop; I get a lot more accomplished, and it's easier to keep my assignments organized. I can also complete homework a lot faster when I can type it out verses writing it. It's also great practice for college. I do admit that I spend a lot of time on facebook outside of school hours, but I don't feel that that's the school's responsibility to take on. Regardless of if you have facebook or not, there are going to be those who don't do as well in school simply because they are not going to put in the effort. Facebook is one of several excuses that you could use. Though I appreciate the school's willingness to help us out as students, they already have a lot on their hands. I don't want the tech people to be more overwhelmed than they need to be (I know the printers can be a bit of a headache).

I think the best way to help students at Holland Christian in the long run is to not help them now. While attempting to help students who struggle with time usage between homework and facebook (or computer games, digg, etc.) will aid in the short term, the long term effect is that students may find it difficult to balance their computer usage when at college. In college classes, they will not only have facebook to tempt them, but msn, in depth computer games, and countless other technology related devilries. Allowing students to struggle with time management with a computer now may provide initial difficulties, but in the long run it will put our students ahead when it comes to serious time management in college. Think of it like vulcanizing tires. Exposing students to a little bit of heat is uncomfortable, but when it comes again in the future, students won't melt.

I love how so many students think it's their laptop and their time. Did you pay for it? Honestly, if there is anything the school cold do to stop addiction is to block. The rest is up to parents. But seriously, those of you who think you need it that bad need to get a life.

Face book is a web site it is only the choice of the students to make it a big deal and disruption i also think if any of the teachers think it is a problem it is purely opinion and out of resent for a students mistake. Take for example we in english class used facebook for a high point project so there should be no problem opening it completely and if you say it's a problem you never gave us a chance to learn from it and blocked it. Luke Terpstra p.s. What the heck is my problem with having it any ways!?! It's not my fault.

I fully believe that, outside of school, it is our job to control our own time. While we are in school, Facebook should be blocked. Before it was blocked, people were on it in class more often than not; it was a distraction. However, when we are outside of school, we are on our own time. It is not the school's job to control our time outside of school. If a student has a problem with "overFacebooking" and is not getting their homework done, it is entirely the student's fault.

Facebook is a site, using it is a choice. As soon as people accept that facebook ,just like anything else, can be a distraction. The only reason facebook is a problem is because there are some of us who like using it more then doing homework. There is nothing wrong with facebook its just how you use it. So instead of focusing on how we think facebook is the problem we should focus on helping those who have a problem using it. Get rid of facebook and the problem will not be eliminated, seeing how the problem is time management. Help the person with their problem and facebook wont be an anchor for them anymore, and neither will any other distraction they might find. And for those who think that the laptops are the problem i couldnt disagree with you more, the laptops are a tool, something to help you. You can chose not to use it. ya ya that you can say that teachers make you use them but thats only for research or activities, an now that we have laptops we dont have to make a trip the computer labs to do this. And yes maybe you have to have a paper typed but thats always been true weither or not we have the laptops. So really the problem has nothing to do with laptops. Its with those who use them for things there not ment to be used for. Come on seriously the laptops are not the problem at all.

I don't know why anyone hasn't pointed out that blocking Facebook on the laptops after school would have almost no effect except for being a slight annoyance. Most students have other computers in their home besides the school laptops. Whenever I get a notice saying that a sight is blocked, I just use another computer.

More on the point of laptop importance than facebook, I personally started with disagreement to the laptop program. I really didn't see why the school was spending so much money on laptops. (Yeah, I know our tuition went up too, but when you calculate in all the school modification that were needed to accommodate laptops, a lot went into the whole program.) I was pretty sure there had to be a better use for all that money. (Say maybe a whole second school in Africa perhaps?) That, and a lot of teachers, especially the first few weeks, seemed obsessed with the fact that because they had the technology, they had to use it. Like moodle posts. Seriously? It was one of the most useless exercise I've had to go through, to be honest. None the less, between my addiction to being able to work on typed homework on the floor of my bedroom or in a couch in front of the TV, I've learned to love my mac. Though I'm sure it is a bad thing for some people, the possibilities of multitasking it has opened up have been amazing. I finish things far faster and have managed to become an even better typer. I'm sure the amount of computer knowledge I've gained through the laptop program is going to help me in my future career, whatever it ends up being. And instant test results. I can check my grades and progress pretty much whenever I want. It is really helpful to keep up to date with things.
Anyway, a long post to say, laptops have plenty of pros and cons. But, for those of you so completely against them, you can't deny they have some value in our lives and educations.

I am not addicted to FaceBook, and I never will be. Still, I understand the grasp "addiction" can have on a person because I too am human. No, really? uh-huh, yep. I just hope the things I'm addicted to won't mold me too much, waste too much of my time, or affect my health/wellbeing (be that spiritually, emotionally, physically, etc).... So... here is my list of addictions: coffee in the morning--can't start without it. Sitting on the couch watching the birds at my feeder--could do that for an hour. Avoiding my laundry like the plague--bad addiction. Bed--I'm addicted to my bed, I love that bed cuz it's so warm and cozy. Oh yea--how could I forget. I'm addicted to reading--I read everything--trash, classics, comics, sports, advertisements, cereal boxes, any print, any where, anytime. What I love reading most of all is my students' stuff. I love hearing what the students of our school think, believe, feel....that is why I am addicted to these blogs. Eeep. Okay, okay: I've found a way to curb the blog addiction. I make myself do two hours of grading first (I am not addicted to grading), THEN I read your blogs. To all of you wise people who said we must learn to manage our time: you are right. But also remember to live in grace: sometimes you'll waste the lovely gift of time, and sometimes you won't. Live and learn; get up again, dust yourself off, and reclaim time. Oh, yea, I have to go. There's a new bird at the feeder and she is beautiful....

Ok you older people never had facebook and i understand that but facebook is a huge part oh how kisd talk to each other. Facebook saved me a bunch oh times. Lots of times i can't get a hild of my friend on the phone so i hop on the computer and get on facebook and he is there so i can hang with him. Some of us have a ton of time on our hands and we would like to do somthing with it. And some of us are also helping others with home life. I HATE IT WHEN FACEBOOK IS BLOCKED. I am in track and i can't ever get on because as soon as i get home it is blocked. And then i have to wait a couple of hours to talk to friends about going to the movies or just talking.

I think you guys have blocked enough websites already, so I don't think that you should take away another that matters a ton to a lot of people. When we had spring break I wanted to get on facebook but it was blocked half the day. That is the main way that I communicate with other people. So I think that facebook shouldn't block it.
